Rebuild, rewrite or refactor — the honest answer

A fixed-price discovery for one system you've outgrown: we recover what it actually does, then tell you plainly whether to rebuild, rewrite or refactor — with a costed plan. £4,000, yours to keep.

Solutions we've built power teams at:

  • Amazon Web Services
  • Auto Trader
  • Cedars-Sinai
  • Jet2holidays
  • Jaguar Land Rover
  • Dover Street Market
  • Dexters
  • Lookers

Every step, with a team who's done it before

You suspect the system you rely on needs rebuilding, but a full rewrite is the most expensive way to be wrong. This discovery settles it in a fixed engagement: we recover what the current system really does, weigh rebuild against refactor, and hand you a costed plan — before anyone commits to a build.

  1. First call

A no-cost call to check a rebuild is even the question — sometimes a targeted fix or a refactor solves it for far less, and if so we'll point you there before you pay anything.

  2. The discovery

You commit to a fixed £4,000 to reverse-engineer the current system and map everything it does — agreed before we start, with no obligation to build anything afterwards.

  3. The deliverable

You get an as-is and target spec, a straight rebuild-vs-refactor recommendation and a costed build plan — yours to keep, whether or not we're the ones who build it.

  4. Build it, or don't

If the plan says rebuild, we can build it from £15,000, fixed price and milestone-paid, with the old system running until cutover. If it says don't, you've saved a costly mistake — and the spec is still yours.

From patchwork to one system

Three teams that had outgrown how they worked: a London contractor running thousands of defects on spreadsheets, paper checklists and manual follow-ups; a client running its whole caseload across a patchwork of separate tools; and an energy supplier quoting by hand. Each got one system built to replace the workaround — the energy team's lifted lead-generation capacity 5x in three months.

  • WeSnag

A large London-based construction company managing major residential sites — dozens of contractors, thousands of defects — came to CodeLeap for a digital snagging platform. Within 6 months, we delivered a fully functioning mobile app that reduced human errors and accelerated the snagging process for construction managers.

Our approach

How the discovery runs — the method we use to work out what your system does and whether it's worth rebuilding, so you know what £4,000 buys before you book the first call.

  • Reverse-engineering

We read the running system and its code to recover what it actually does today — including the undocumented behaviour the business quietly depends on.

  • As-is mapping

Every feature, integration and data flow the current system carries gets written down — the map most outgrown systems never had.

  • Rebuild-vs-refactor scoring

Each part is scored on whether it's cheaper to keep and refactor or to rebuild, so the recommendation rests on evidence, not instinct.

  • Dependency and risk audit

We find what the system is coupled to — ageing libraries, one-off integrations, a database nobody wants to touch — and rank the risks by cost and likelihood.

  • Target spec

A spec of what the rebuilt system should do, written so any competent team can quote and build from it.

  • Costed build plan

The spec comes with a fixed-price plan and a staged sequence, so the rebuild decision is arithmetic, not a leap of faith.

  • An honest 'don't rebuild'

Where a refactor or leaving it alone beats a rebuild, the report says so — the same price, and far cheaper than finding out mid-build.

  • And much more

This is what comes up most often, not a limit. Bring us something that isn't on this list and we'll get up to speed on it — working with something new is the job, not an obstacle.

What our clients are saying

Real reviews from clients we have delivered for, on Clutch and elsewhere.

  • The enthusiasm, understanding of our mission, and passion from the first few minutes of the call were the deciding factors in choosing CodeLeap. Within 3 months of our app launching, we had over 1,500 downloads, appeared in leading publications from Forbes, The Metro, Marie Claire, Women's Fitness and many more, and started raising further investment.
    Charlie CEO, Becon
  • They are incredibly diligent in the quality of work they produce, and go above and beyond when it comes to solving issues faced within the project, and to ensure we meet strict project deadlines. You never feel like you are one of many clients, and they ensure they are always there to help with any need you have, no matter how big or small.
Amelia Parmiter Marketing Manager, AWS - Marble
  • CodeLeap made me feel like my options were limitless in terms of what could be achieved, which was critical to me as we were creating something very unique. I'm glad I chose Codeleap over a large corporation as the personable approach resulted in a smooth and pleasant experience.

Any questions? We're here to answer

Everything you might want to know before starting a project with us.

  • It depends on the foundations. If the architecture is sound and the pain is localised, a refactor is cheaper and safer. A rebuild earns its cost when the system fights every change — when adding a feature means touching everything. The discovery answers it with evidence from your actual code, for a fixed £4,000.

  • £4,000, fixed. That buys the full discovery: your current system reverse-engineered, an as-is and target spec, and a rebuild-vs-refactor recommendation with a costed build plan. There's no cost creep, and no obligation to build anything with us afterwards.

  • A full rewrite from scratch is the riskiest option and the one we recommend least — it throws away years of hard-won behaviour. Often a staged rebuild or a targeted refactor gets you the same result for far less risk. Discovery weighs all three against what your system actually does before you commit.

  • Four things: an as-is spec of what the system does today, a target spec of what it should do, a rebuild-vs-refactor recommendation, and a fixed-price build plan. It's all yours to keep and act on with any team — us, your own developers, or someone else.

  • Then we'll say so. Sometimes the answer is a focused refactor; sometimes it's leaving a working system alone. A recommendation that flatters a rebuild would be worthless. That fixed-price 'don't rebuild' can save you a six-figure mistake.
